WHO Issues Alert Over Critical Shortage of Weight-Loss Medications

Under a tenth of people eligible to benefit from weight-loss injections like Wegovy are able to get them, warns the global health agency as it issues its first recommendations on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide currently obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, over two billion are projected to be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with holistic and continuous treatment," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are significant barriers to broad availability to the jabs that can help people shift significant weight, explains the agency.

Even in the current most favorable outlook, the production of these medications might only reach around 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The guideline encourages countries and companies to widen availability, via measures such as licensing agreements.

A patent on the active ingredient – the main ingredient of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

How Obesity Jabs Function

The injections imitate a biological compound to slow digestion, reduce hunger and boost satiety so people reduce food intake.

Individuals commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence indicates patients may see weight return after a year of discontinuing the medication, when their typical hunger return.

Being above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for developing health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in every country and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
