The McLaren driver narrowly beat team-mate and championship contender the Australian for the top spot in the closing stages of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who seized the championship lead from Piastri by one point after winning in Mexico City two weeks ago, beat the Australian by a mere 0.023s. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before sprint qualifying set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the other racer in the points battle, sitting with a 36-point deficit Norris, ended up in 17th place as his team ran a alternative strategy. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at corner four during the early running. Tsunoda slid over the track edges before rotating through the gravel trap, and was lucky to avoid just a minor contact of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the very end of the session, turning around through the high-speed Mergulho corner before the final corner on to the main straight. The veteran ended the session in 19th, just behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with the German's car third fastest, 0.619 seconds slower than Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was fourth fastest, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto fifth from the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and Williams' Carlos Sainz.
