Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
