Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:

• Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
• Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.

Jones, a figure who is recognized for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine manageable for the wealthy proprietor.

This event comes after a controversial offseason for Jones, who faced significant criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt star defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
