Congress Greenlights Legislation to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Records

The Senate on Tuesday quickly approved to a measure that will require the publication of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, after a near-unanimous vote in the US House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to forestall the bipartisan effort involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his return to the White House.

Swift Passage in Both Chambers

The Senate acted by consensus, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a near-unanimous vote.

The public have endured sufficient delay. The survivors have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”

Future Action

The measure next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. The president stated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Though Trump has for months rejected the controversy over the government’s handling of the Epstein case as a “Democrat hoax”, he voiced approval for the legislation over the past few days, and said he would give his assent if it comes to him.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their advocates who were seated in a House gallery, broke into applause after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he worried the measure would disclose personal information of witnesses, persons of interest and others caught up in the investigation.
