Colombia's President Declares 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' if United States Launches an Attack.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the rhetoric in their verbal conflict, further raising tensions bilaterally after US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates drug factories and production sites and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump added.

Rising Threats and Accusations

Talking to journalists over the weekend, the US president threatened similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, claiming the nation faces serious problems and governed by a sick man involved in producing the drug and distributing it to the United States."

Although Colombia remains the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, no proof exists linking President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly tied to the business.

A Strained Relationship

Colombia has long been a key ally of the US in the campaign combating drug cartels and benefited from wide political approval from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations such as the Clan del Golfo, the ELN guerrilla group and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), most of its former fighters disbanded after a historic peace agreement.

Colombia's Defiant Rebuttal

When asked whether military intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards against his country, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that to me."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised decades ago, categorically refuted these allegations. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. End the false accusations," he posted in a post.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will become a multitude of fighters in the mountains. And if they detain the president, whom a large part of the country holds in high esteem, they will release the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed a period in his early life participating with the radical M-19 guerrilla group although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he took part in drafting the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a prominent senator. He held the office of mayor of the capital city before being elected president.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he said.

Reinforced Protection and Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s protection team had been reinforced.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders spanning the political spectrum have condemned the notion of American military action against their nation.

Political and Financial Strains

The US revoked the president's entry visa subsequent to he called on American soldiers to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, it placed economic restrictions against the president, his spouse and various close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels near Venezuela and bombing suspected drug boats against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets have also conducted strikes on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
